Mark, not only are you right that your idea would reduce the amount of A508 but in fact we can avoid all of it. A mile or so west of Cosgrove we could branch left to follow the old road which crosses a bridge over the A5 into the housing estate behind the Old Stratford traffic lights.
I led the Cs that way a few months ago (in the other direction) and it was fine, all tarmac. No A508, no A5 roundabout, no traffic. I use it often as a direct way between Stony and Castlethorpe via Cosgrove. Nothing however can persuade any software to include it in a planned route.

Hi Chris, just a thought, at mile 36 if we turn left instead of right and go through Cosgrove the loop cuts out a lot of the A508, its not a road I cycle, but looks an easier option.
The Stoney/A5 roundabout is traffic light controlled which should be less risky?
