This is an opportunity to ride in the beautiful north Cotswolds and south Warwickshire plain, to clock a hundred miler and to tackle some legendary hills. Tim and I are using it as preparation for the Fred Whitton Challenge at the end of next week. Others are welcome to join us.
Given the amount of climbing and distance, I anticipate an average moving pace of 13½ mph, about 7½ hours moving time. With a lunch stop at Feldon Valley Kitchen and two cafe stops, there will be about 1½ hours of refuelling time. Add half an hour for luck, and we should be back at the cars around 5 pm.
You can ring me on 0741 391 1805 if you want to discuss.

I'm glad you made the right decision, Chris. Mine was probably over cautious, but I chose the option of riding solo today instead and staying a bit warmer.
As to Wednesday, the same situation may arise as it is forecast to be only 2 degrees at 8am after a cold clear night, which spells ground frost, so I may go out solo on Thursday instead. Come to think of it, it might be an occasion to use your Steeple Aston route as the (light) breeze is coming from that quarter.

Hello Chris, I've just seen your message. Yes, I was sure. Akeley is known for its sub tropical micro climate, probably due, as Stuart says, to being closer to the sun!
I might have risked riding as it was 3 degrees and due to rise, so any ground frost would probably not have felled me. However, I've been sticking to a simple policy about not going out in the morning if there is ice on the windscreen. Instead I did a short ride after lunch yesterday and a longer one this morning.

Chris, I was planning to head west too but solo as I wanted to leave earlier to be back in time for things afterwards. However I see from the forum that you're thinking of shortening the ride which might allow an earlier return. Would coffee still be at Spokes? I'll wait and see, perhaps leaving earlier to do an extra loop before meeting you for coffee.

Hello Chris, thanks for posting a route. I've registered but should say that 15 mph is unrealistic for me in winter conditions - heavier tyres, metal bike, firm breezes, abundant clothing. I've only managed 12 or 13 point something in eight rides since November, but might come close to an average of 14 if I worked hard and slipstreamed.
However, if I was losing too much ground after coffee I'd be happy to meander home solo.

Morning all, happy to lead on Sunday, eastwards to Rushmere Country Park for a change. The route goes out via Little Horwood and Stoke Hammond, back via Bragenham and Stewkley.
It´s 46 miles, 2500 feet of climbing per Strava (probably less than 2000 Garmin feet!). No hills to speak of. I'll probably be on a winter bike so the pace will be moderate, mine at least.
The GPX file is below. If you click on it in your computer it will appear in your downloads, from where you can upload it to your system, which will no doubt present it in the form of a map. Maybe it works on a mobile phone as well, but I don´t know how.

There are only two takers so far. I'd certainly be happy to start earlier for a cooler ride if it would encourage others to come out.
The argument that we should leave late to reduce traffic risk is always valid, but reducing sunstroke risk and discomfort by leaving early seems more so in present circumstances. Especially as there is no school run in August and no need to dice with the A508.
Would you consider an 8 or 8.30 start, Tim? -
-
Mark, not only are you right that your idea would reduce the amount of A508 but in fact we can avoid all of it. A mile or so west of Cosgrove we could branch left to follow the old road which crosses a bridge over the A5 into the housing estate behind the Old Stratford traffic lights.
I led the Cs that way a few months ago (in the other direction) and it was fine, all tarmac. No A508, no A5 roundabout, no traffic. I use it often as a direct way between Stony and Castlethorpe via Cosgrove. Nothing however can persuade any software to include it in a planned route.
Tim, I'll be on the ride so I can show the way at that point if you agree.

Hello Swans,
In view of the hot weather forecast for Sunday, I´m planning an 8 o´clock ride, so as to get back before it heats up too much. My planned route is relatively short and flat, only 41 miles and 1300 feet of climbing, with a stop at the George and Dragon in Quainton, which opens at 9am.
I don´t know how to share it as a map, other than if you click on the attached gpx file and upload it to your own navigation system.
Please click attending if you want to do the ride. RV at 7.45 am at the Swan Pool. I´d recommend bringing two full water bottles, just in case.
Anyone who wants to ride further is welcome to devise an extended route back, or to add a loop once we are back in Buckingham. We can discuss options over coffee.

Afternoon guys and gals, Sunday looks like being cool and dry with a firm breeze from the NE. I'm happy to lead a ride in that direction for a coffee stop at Emberton Country Park near Olney. Please click the attend button if you'd like to do this ride (48 miles). We can keep away from the traffic on the A508 by taking the birdwatching route around the lakes then up the cycle path to the Filgrave turn.
I don't know if this format will make the route visible to you: http://www.strava.com/routes/2893898156909231794
In any event the gpx version below should get it into your device for navigation purposes.
Hello Stewart, it says on the forum that there have been no views of this post. And no-one else has signed up. I wonder if there is an IT problem.
