  • We are GO! for the IoW

Sunday 16th is the day - the 65 mile route is favoured (please download the new gpx)
    leaving Buckingham at 7am
Sundays weather is 20ºC ish slim chance of rain, but a bit breezy

Here is the route - please download and take a look, it’s all new roads to me.

Note, there are 2 significant climbs - I have a café stop beforehand so, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? I’ve also included a couple of sightseeing stops.

Nothing set in stone, happy to make changes on the day.

I’ve added an alternative gpx file (saved via Garmin connect)

  • Thanks for all the feedback.

Looks like the majority of those that are interested can do the 16th
So that’s the date (sorry Wolfgang)

We currently have 2 offers to drive - covering 7 participants with 5 people currently interested and available.

Can I stress this trip is open to everyone - don’t be shy, get your name down and we’ll plan routes accordingly. Please click the I’m attending button even if you are a possibility and we’ll do whatever we can to accommodate.

Paul and I have been busy behind the scenes cooking up an away-day.
Initially thoughts were around heading North with options around Shakespeare country.
However - triggered by a conversation with other members on recent rides, the idea of a trip to the Isle of Wight emerged. We figured if we are prepared to travel, lets go the extra mile and make it something unusual for us landlocked middle Englanders

    The proposal

A day trip, because it makes logistics easy and keeps costs down
2 route options 65 miles and 45 miles approx
    starting and ending in Yarmouth

    Logistics

Cross to Yarmouth IoW from Lymington (as it’s less busy and more civilised than Southampton)
Example ferry cost is £87 inc 4 passengers per vehicle (5m vehicle over 2.24m high) - may be able to get group discount. We would look to divide all costs evenly amongst participants - est. £25-£30 including some petrol money

    Timetable, something like:

Leave Buckingham at 7 heading towards the ferry at Lymington
    2 hours travel time
    40min ferry
    4 hours cycle plus stop
    40min ferry
2 hours back to Buckingham for 7ish

    Dates

    A choice:
    September – 16 or 23
note the 23rd is Autumn equinox - so this could be an alternative to the all club ride (or we do that the week after)

What would be great is a show of hands to gauge interest (please click the I’m attending button)
    and leave a comment including:
    Your preferred date,
    Distance,
If you would be willing to drive (number of bikes and passengers you can carry),
Or if you would like a lift

Pleas also feel free to leave any other thoughts in your post
We can then do some detailed planning to make it all happen

Initial thoughts on routes attached for reference

Google Streetmap animation of road and route we can expect

  • 23rd please

  • @PatH
I will probably find my own way as would go for full weekend and visit my dad.
You can park in Lymington for £5 all day and do a return crossing for about £16 each.
More expensive to take the car and parking more expensive the other side. Just a thought!
    I would do full 63. 😊

  • Am interested but could only do 16th, so understand if not this time.

Happy to drive and take passengers if you do go for 16th. 63 miles fine. (Could take me plus three passengers; I have Thule roof bike carriers for four bikes.)

  • I’ve i preferences for the 16th don’t know why? But ok with both. Also have a 3 Bike Thule carrier so happy to drive. Was thinking of parking in Lymington and cross for the £19:50 return walk on ticket. But it would be good to have a vehicle island side for emergencies though?

The 2 routes posted are there to encourage 2 groups , 1) for those happy with the longer ride and 2) the shorter for those that would prefer a shorter ride, simples..

  • Excellent input so far - thank you
    Any more?

  • Looks like I can only do the 16th

  • The two dates work for me with a preference for the 16/09.
Happy to drive but no tow bar on my car, not very helpful.
We also talked about IoW trip with some BMCC riders and apparently a date was set for 25/08 (completely forgot about it)
I love the sea and would be really happy to do both dates.
I think the plan was to park the car and cross as foot passenger with our bikes.
Preference for longer route...we need to make the most of it!

  • bumping this up

  • Looking forward to this. I am unable to drive myself, so am hoping to cadge a lift.

  • Anton is a go to but will be driving himself as staying over with family.

  • I’m sure we can squeeze you in somewhere Peter.

  • If there's a space available that would be good but I'm happy to drive. I could possibly take one other person as I don't have a rack fitted yet. 65 miles would be my preference to justify the drive.

  • Hi Gary
I need to catch up with @JamesT, to double check he can make it
    will confirm asap

  • Yes definitely up for it, happy to drive and can take three others. Will let Pat sort out the logistics of who, when, etc!

  • An Up-Date for the leaving time for us all has changed to 6:30 to catch the 9:00 ferry ⛴.

  • 6.30 depart....understood. Looking forward to it.
