  • Afternoon all

Details of Thursdays Mountain bike ride.

To make a change from the last couple, which have been quite mountain bike focused this one is better for cyclocross, gravel bikes etc and mainly track and bridlepath based with a fair bit of minor roads.

Somewhat controversially, I started the route in Winslow to take advantage of some trails I haven't used yet for Swan events.

So, there's a meet at 7pm at the Swan Leisure Centre as usual, a ride down the A413 cycle-path for some quick mountain bike miles, and then an indirect route heading back to Buckingham. Estimated time 2 to 2.5 hours all in.

GPXs for the route from Winslow to Buckingham, and one for Buckingham down the cycle-path to Winslow (if needed) are attached.

Please make sure you have suitable lights on your bike (and make sure they're charged up/have good batteries etc).

Hope to see you at the Swan Leisure Centre at 7 on Thursday!

  • Can't read .gpx files, nothing works for me! do you have a garmin version at all please?

  • I don't @paulw. I've no idea how to make a route in Garmin, I must be doing something seriously wrong because I can't find any way to do so :-(

  • I can help - bear with me and I’ll right a tutorial with the steps required

  • Step-by-step guide to downloading a gpx file and saving as a course to your Garmin Connect account. - Please note this method works for me on my Mac, labels may be different on PC

Step 1: Right click and save the GPX file to your desktop
Step 2: Goto http://www.gpsies.com and make yourself an account
Step 3: Upload the saved GPX file and convert it to GPX Track (I leave all other options in their default state) - the file should process and save to your downloads folder
Step 4: Login to connect.garmin.com and ‘import data’ via the cloud icon top right of the screen
Step 5: Drag and drop or Browse to your new GPX file (it will be in your downloads folder) - the GPX should load up and be displayed
Step 6: Click the ‘gear’ icon and ‘save as course’ (I imagine you can also ’send to device’)
Step 7: Remember to make it public if you want to share with other members

Here’s the link to the course on Garmin Connect

let me know how you get on

  • Thanks @PatH I've got as far as Step 5, but can't find the Gear icon for step 6? The word "Gear" on the side menu just gives me a list of golf clubs! Where have I gone wrong?

  • You did well to get as far as you did ...
It’s the icon below you avatar
pencil (edit), star (favourite), share (share!), lock (privacy), gear (more...)

  • Aha! Thanks @PatH, this must be the only course ever to take longer to set up than to ride!

Hopefully this works... Enjoy, @PaulW! :-)

  • Works for me - I needed to duplicate your route to add it to my routes if that makes sense

@Phil do you want to edit my steps so it makes sense to you? Then we should make it a sticky somewhere.

  • Brilliant work there guys and you can also create a .gpx file etc by using the bottom r/h edit (...) button if you've created a route using garmin connect...

  • That's what I do to get a garmin course into Strava. There is an extra step as you have to upload the gpx into Strava as a manual activity - save it as a course and then delete the activity.

  • Also try bikehike.co.uk

  • @PatH Actually what you wrote was very good - I just confused the word "Gear" which produces a list of golf clubs (none of which I own!) with the symbol for a gear * but once that minor confusion was over it all worked well.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a "how to" guide somewhere, I think.
